Case Study: Procul Cura
Accelerating the Vision for a Scalable Remote Care Platform for Specialty Medicine
Opportunity: Enabling Specialty Care Physicians to Examine Patients from Anywhere
Procul Cura is a healthcare platform that improves access to specialty medical care in underserved communities. The company developed an innovative care delivery model that allows licensed ophthalmologists to conduct in-person patient examinations remotely through digitally enabled exam lanes operated onsite by trained staff. This approach expands access to specialty care in locations where provider shortages often create barriers to treatment, including correctional facilities, foster care systems, and rural communities. Unlike traditional telehealth, patients remain onsite while specialists participate remotely, preserving in-person clinical workflows and reimbursement while expanding access to care.
As a startup, Procul Cura needed more than a development partner. The company required a strategic technology team capable of validating an entirely new care delivery model while transforming complex clinical, operational, and regulatory requirements into a scalable software platform. Because no commercial solution existed for this approach, success depended on a partner that understood not only software development but also the realities of U.S. healthcare operations, provider workflows, HIPAA compliance, medical imaging standards, and insurance reimbursement.
"They have been excellent partners throughout a complex and evolving project."

Solution: Building the Technology Powering Scalable Remote Specialty Care
Procul Cura engaged Orases as both a technology consultant and product development partner to transform an innovative healthcare concept into a viable, scalable specialty care platform. Through collaborative discovery, HIT consulting, workflow design, rapid prototyping, and healthcare software development, the team validated the business model, reduced technical risk, established a roadmap for future expansion, and engineered the technology foundation to bring the vision to life.
Validating Remote Care Workflows Through Interactive Prototyping
Remote specialty care requires translating complex clinical and administrative processes into structured digital workflows.
Orases mapped interactions among providers, imaging technicians, office managers, administrators, and patients, then transformed them into purpose-built software experiences. The resulting platform included dedicated dashboards for remote providers, imaging technicians, and office managers, supported by multi-phase onboarding, multi-associate credentialing, system analytics, and administrative functionality.
Interactive prototypes let teams validate workflows before full development, giving stakeholders and investors a tangible demonstration of how the operating model would function in real-world healthcare environments.
Designing a HIPAA-Compliant Healthcare Architecture
With the underlying model validated, the focus shifted to building a platform that could operate securely in healthcare environments. HIPAA compliance and the protection of sensitive patient information were embedded throughout the platform architecture, shaping how users accessed the system, how healthcare data moved across workflows, and how information was managed. Orases designed the platform around HIPAA requirements for security, privacy, access, and data handling, creating a secure and scalable foundation for remote care delivery.
Integrating DICOM Imaging and PACS for Remote Diagnostics
Medical imaging was fundamental to enabling specialists to evaluate patients remotely.
Orases designed DICOM-compliant imaging workflows and PACS integration that allowed diagnostic images to move securely between imaging technicians and remote specialists. Dedicated technician and provider experiences gave each user access to the information and tools required at their stage of the diagnostic process.
By integrating medical imaging functionality directly into the care workflow, the platform connected image acquisition, diagnostic review, and specialty care within a unified digital experience.
Enabling Medical Billing and Reimbursement
A fundamental requirement of the remote care model was ensuring providers could be reimbursed at the same rate as traditional in-office visits. To make that possible, the platform needed to support the billing, documentation, and reimbursement requirements that govern established healthcare delivery.
Orases incorporated these requirements directly into the technology, designing workflows to mirror traditional in-office care processes and support appropriate medical billing and reimbursement for remote encounters. By making reimbursement a core part of the platform design, Procul Cura could introduce a new model for specialty care without requiring providers to sacrifice the financial viability of delivering that care.
Advancing Clinical Research Through Healthcare Data
Beyond care delivery, Orases helped conceptualize a parallel research platform that can securely aggregate anonymized patient data from participating organizations.
The future platform is envisioned to support advanced analytics, clinical research, and population health insights while preserving patient privacy, extending Procul Cura’s technology ecosystem from specialty care delivery and diagnostics into healthcare data and research.
Built to Scale Across the Specialty Care Continuum
Although the platform was initially designed around ophthalmology, its workflows and underlying architecture were built with broader specialty care delivery in mind. Rather than creating a point solution for a single specialty, Orases built an extensible architecture that can accommodate new clinical workflows, provider types, diagnostic requirements, and specialty-specific functionality as Procul Cura expands.
This approach provides a scalable technology foundation that can support more than 80 physician subspecialties without rebuilding the core platform for each new area of care.

Results: Establishing a Strong Foundation for Healthcare Innovation
The engagement transformed an innovative healthcare concept into a validated product vision that supports fundraising conversations, strategic partnerships, and future development. By reducing uncertainty around both the technology and the underlying business model, Orases helped Procul Cura move forward with greater confidence.

Beyond delivering an MVP, Orases helped establish the operational, technical, and regulatory foundation for an entirely new model of specialty healthcare delivery. Equally important, the engagement established Orases as a trusted strategic partner, providing ongoing guidance rooted in both healthcare technology expertise and real-world knowledge of U.S. clinical operations.
Rather than simply gathering software requirements, Orases helped define how an entirely new model of specialty care would operate in practice.
