Raising awareness of Prince George’s County agricultural community

University of Maryland Extension is a service of The Prince George’s County Office, partially supported by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Farm PGC (Prince George’s County) was developed to focusing primarily on promoting agricultural opportunities and assisting agricultural businesses within the county. Services provided by Farm PGC connects residents, agricultural producers, farmers markets, food retailers, restaurateurs, and county agencies to each other for the purpose of promoting agricultural economic development and healthy food access in Prince George’s County.

CHALLENGE

Connecting the community with agricultural business

The original Farm PGC website was outdated and difficult to maintain. It wasn’t responsive, for mobile devices, and the content wasn’t focused on the local community that Farm PGC serves. The Prince George’s County Office needed a site that would better explain their goals and mission for Farm PGC, and make their information easily accessible and understandable for the agricultural business community, and the general Prince George’s County population.

SOLUTION

Increasing return on investment

Working in collaboration with University of Maryland Extension, Orases created a well-organized site structure and a consistent, easy-to-use navigation menu system. This new information architecture allows users to get to any content within 3 clicks and fulfills the needs of Farm PGC users. By using a pre-determined and well-tested template, Orases was able to save Maryland tax dollars. The pre-determined template and website modules created a great return on investment for the organization and made web training on the site within 30 minutes. The new site is much more organized and the content can easily be updated thanks to the new Content Management System (CMS). With the site’s Google Maps integration, visitors can search for and get information about local farms, farmers markets, breweries, and agri-tourism areas to educate consumers on the local ingredients. The responsive site also has an events section, so community members can stay up to date on local events.

RESULTS

Encouraging growth in Prince George’s County

The new Farm PGC site has proven successful for the University of Maryland Extension and The Prince George’s County Office. Local farmers and restaurants get more customer referrals from the site than ever before, and visitors to the site can find information on Prince George’s agriculture faster and easier. The site has even brought in more agricultural business to Prince George’s County, including more wineries and breweries, which have increased visitors and tax revenue in the area.
