Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Laboratory Services for Agriculture
Application Modernization And Enhancement
How Orases developed a custom, modernized data analytics software
We partnered with a 25-year-old agricultural service laboratory that is the largest of its kind, with a focus on the analysis of forages and feeds. Their analytical services support some of the largest commercial feed manufacturers and most respected nutritional consulting groups involved in diet formulation.
The technologies they’ve created, developed, or adapted and implemented are focused on increasing the efficiency of resource utilization, reducing carbon footprint, improving animal welfare, and ultimately improving human welfare. As an example, many industrial and food processes generate co-products or waste streams that are best handled as inputs to ruminant rations. This company provides systems of analysis that allow for the characterization of co-products for inclusion in animal diets.

The Challenge
Developing a brand-new version of their existing software.
The current working system relies on several overlapping programs that work in tandem to place sample orders, manage accounts and billing, and report results. The original laboratory information management systems (LIMS) used were Win Lab for data analysis and sample release, Add Sample for customer account management and logging samples, and Win Utils for entering data into Win Lab.
Due to limitations and age of these systems, they were unable to expand them to meet the growing need for new testing and reporting. To cover these needs an intranet-based LIMS was added to expand the Win Lab system to allow for additional reported data. Other smaller systems have been added over the years as well.
Solution
A modernized application that fits the company’s needs and operations.
Orases will create a newly developed laboratory information management system (LIMS) that will meet their current needs for account management, sample receiving, and billing while also adapting to future needs in testing as needed. This system will have an easy-to-follow, intuitive layout.
The ability to internally manage the administrative portions of the system so users have access to specific parts of the system, report setup and generation, adding packages, adjusting pricing, etc. will also play a vital role in this system. Flexibility, ease of use, and administrative oversight will be key portions of this system. Reporting will include NIR testing.

Results
The company now has drag-and-drop editable templates with customizable widgets; shipment management and tracking; integrated NIR Prediction Engine and ability to Model NDF; and multiple receiving workflows, so labs can be more efficient.
The Orases development team also delivered a front-end mobile application experience, allowing the company’s partners and customers to create, manage, and submit their samples from the field.
Elimination Of Overlapping Systems
LIMS replaced legacy systems that are no longer interdependent on each other.
Removal Of Limitations
Legacy systems were updated removing limitations through modifiable systems & solutions.
New Testing & Reporting Capabilities
They are now able to offer clients and partners new capabilities while having internal oversight of the data collected.
